It doesn't make sense to me that CB was talking about himself in connection with the AEA death. I mean, after all, he *didn't* die like that, did he? He died more like the way he said he would. With Scully by his side (OK he said 'in bed' but after all, he did like her and I think it was wishful thinking). Like Stardoe said, Mulder was pushing him to get clues and was being very insistent that Clyde help him. M and CB started out badly when Mulder first showed him his FBI badge and CB said "I'm supposed to believe that's a real name?" I thought CB did seem really weary and quite ready for his own (already anticipated) death. I remember Mulder being shocked by the AEA put down in the car. But M hung so much on CB's words that he thought CB might actually mean it!
M: "Why're you telling *me* that?"
In fact, CB never said "that's how *you're* going to die". He said "AEA must be a terrible way to die" as if out of the blue. It was a joke. I'm sure of it.
