Just like you say, when Skinner gave them the assignment Mulder would be grinning ear to ear. I think Scully would have been displaying an air of professioanlism which I think she locked into for the whole case but she was probably getting a bit red cheeked thinking about what shenanigans Mulder might have in store, knowing him!
