I have been broken down before in the days before cell phones. It was just below Athens on I-75 and my wife and her grandmother were with me. A new tire (set bought the previous day) blew out. No problem you say? I was in a new Ford Mustang and went to change the tire. Oddly the tire tool under the spare tire still wrapped in plastic did not fit the lugs. The nearest exit was a mile away and the temperature was over 100. A young man stopped and helped us. It would have been terrible if he hadn't shown up.

I am ashamed to hear what I am hearing from Union County folk!

I understand your idea that the break down may be a trap set by a killer or robber. That happened just the other day near Alcoa and an off duty police person was shot by two Mexicans.

But look at the tags on this person's car...Bet they said Union County.

The Union County I remember growing up in is probably dead. Maybe that is why so many of us roll over and let people move in and start running the show. Maybe that is why our elected officials allow these people to move in here and start telling them what is best for the county.

Call me old fashioned, but I still help folks. I'm not faulting those of you who don't this is something you have to weigh for yourself. But how many of you have sported WWJD stickers on your cars?

Now with that said...Where were the police? Why did they not help?

The other day the Ailor Gap red-light was out at school rush time. Ailor Gap was backed up to the old Lamb house and 33 was crowded. As I sat there three cars back from the dead light in Ailor Gap I was astounded to see not one but two county sheriff cars go through on 33. Not only did they not let a single soul out...Neither stopped at a dead red-light to direct traffic. One went to McDonalds and the drive through, the other went north.

We can't pass a car broken down and assume the police will come along and help. Shannon Cole would I've seen him do it. Danny Wayne Collins would...but neither of them were in the two cars I saw.

You break down again and if nobody helps call me I'm in the book.

Chip
