that knowing the right person or being in the right place at the right time can be of advantage in *any* profession, I think it's especially useful in any kind of creative endeavor (i.e. acting, singing, writing ficiton, etc.). For most careers -- like teaching, nursing, engineering and stuff -- the number of people who want to pursue it and are qualified to pursue it is usually roughly equal to the number of job opportunities available. But there are many more talented people around than there are jobs available in the entertainment industry.
Of course, I'm probably pre-disposed to think it's "normal" for a woman to get a part-time or temporary job at the same place where her husband is employed full-time. That's what I did!!
