Subject: William Barrett Travis, Jason Patric, and Texas history

No word yet on who will play Travis. It's been rumoured to be Ethan Hawke, but it's not for certain.

I only know Jason Patric for two things: the 80's vampire movie "The Lost Boys" and for being one of many to have been engaged to Julia Roberts. I think his biggest claim to fame, in fact, is being the man for whom Julia Roberts left Kiefer Sutherland.

I have an irrational affection for Billy Bob Thornton, perhaps due to his connection to Angelia Jolie. I think he's an excellent actor, but have no idea if he's well suited to play Davy Crockett. And I really like Dennis Quaid, though he's been in some clunkers. Frequency is an excellent film.

I know only the most simple history about Texas, and I have a B.A. in history. I know the basics of Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, Santa Anna, the Alamo, etc. But I certainly couldn't give any details of Texas history or even the specifics of the Alamo story. We didn't learn it in school, and I never took any history of Texas or history of Mexico classes in college (though they were offered). But, if you like, I could tell you that Maryland is the seventh state, and all about George Calvert, Lord Baltimore and Cecil Calvert and how King Charles gave them a land grant and how Maryland is named after Queen Henrietta Marie (from France, the wife of King Charles) and St. Mary's City. Most Maryland kids could. And don't even get me started on Francis Scott Key :-)
