This was Never Again, the episode in which Mulder was the biggest jackass ever. I had company in from out of town last weekend, so wasn't able to watch. I had myself a little mini-marathon this morning and watched Never Again and Memento Mori, so I can comment on both. I'm going to write a seperate post on Memento Mori, but I think it's safe to say that Mulder made up for his jackassiness of Never Again in Memento Mori.

First off, Mulder got all freaked out when he couldn't get in touch with Scully, but when she asked where he was going he didn't even tell her. And even though Mulder irritated me to no end in this episode, he really was just acting like a man. Oblivious to what was going on around him, thinking he was the only one capable of making sure things were done right, thinking everything was about him. But enough about Mulder, because this is the SCULLY marathon.

I know that there has been debate about the airing of this and the episodes surrounding it, but I think the fact that we knew about Scully's cancer even though it hadn't been addressed all that directly gave this episode a lot of credence. Scully is clearly going through a crisis from the first moment that we see her. I think she's aware that her life will be changed forever by the cancer and she is totally re-evaluating her life. WHY did she let TXF become her life? How could she have let her life come to a stand still while she spent every waking hour with the same person? Except for her mother, the only person she ever spends any time with is Mulder. And she's led to question even that when Mulder blows into the office and starts giving her orders. She's placed Mulder and the X-Files as the top priority in her life, and she feels like Mulder doesn't even care about her enough to get her a desk. She's so expendable to the X-Files that she doesn't even get her own work space. And of course Mulder reminds her that she was "just assigned" to the X-Files. Which again makes her wonder just WHY she spends so much time with them, since she was just assigned, she has no real calling to them.

But of course, she does as Mulder says and goes to Philadelphia, because what else is she going to do? That is her life. And while she's there doing as Mulder told her, she comes across a seemingly nice, attractive man who shows interest in her. And since Mulder seems to only need her to run errands, why not make herself feel better by spending an evening with him. She then spends the evening talking about her crappy life and how everything is in cycles, indirectly telling us how she feels about Mulder and her life in general. That could only be described as the most depressing date ever. Of course, creepy Ed Jerse doesn't seem to mind.

Then at the end we get to see Mulder again, once again behaving like a jackass and belittling all that Scully went through. Scully just sits there, barely paying attention, reminding me of when I was a teenager and my mom or dad would give me a talking to and the only thing I was thinking about was when they'd stop blabbering on and on. During that whole scene I was just like, "stop talking Mulder!"

Anyway, like Scully says at the end of the episode, not everything is about Mulder. Though, I personally think the whole thing was more about Mulder than Scully cared to admit.
