is for Dogsbreath to actually *HAVE* a personal life, unlike Mulder and Scully. Ideally, I think it would be great if he was, say, married with three or four kids. Have they come right out and *SAID*, in any of the eps he's been in, that he's unmarried? If they haven't, we can assume he is; remember Skinner was on the show for three seasons before we "disovered" there was a Mrs. Skinner!
It's true that I don't like Dogsbreath, but I'm actually attempting to be semi-serious here. I think a main character who wanted to do his job — and do it well — but who was also eager to go home at the end of the day to his spouse and children would make a terrific contrast to the unmarried, childless (at least through the end of Season 7) career-obsessed duo of Mulder and Scully.
If it's been made clear that Dogsbreath is not currently married, he could at least be divorced with kids and maybe an e-wife who he still has feelings for. Or he could be gay and still be sort of semi-closeted and Scully could find out and he could be worried that she might expose him. (*WE* know she wouldn't do something like that, but he doesn't know her very well. Although I'm sure there are "official" policies prohibiting discrimination against gays at the F.B.I., I'm equally sure that introducing his boss to his boyfriend wouldn't win Dogsbreath many brownie points around the bureau.)
When you think about it, really, how likely is is that Scully would be partnered with *TWO* men over the age of 35, both of whom were heterosexual but had never been married?? In Mulder's case, there was at least a plausible explanation as to why he's never married: he was too obsessed with finding his sister to committ to marriage and fatherhood. (Now that he knows the truth about Samantha's disappearnce, he can settle down and live happily ever after with Scully and little Sweeps.) So the natural assumption would be that Dogsbreath is either married, divorced or gay.
