I think the ads we see are a result of the tobacco money (fines) the big companies had to give to the various government health agencies. Schools and other nonprofits, health providers, etc. could apply for these dollars and the ads are a result of that.

I don't smoke--never could stand the stench. My father did and so did his brother--both died from lung cancer as did two more of our older friends. Go figure. My DH does but not in the house. Even though MN has no smoking in public places, there are still a lot of smokers around judging by the number of outdoor ash containers and "leftovers" laying around on the ground. I find that just as gross as having to sit by somebody who stinks like cigarette smoke. Gives me a sinus headache and churns my stomach. For some folks quitting is really difficult as it can be an addiction to nicotine. If one can easily quit, they probably don't have a true nicotine addiction. Some folks just don't want to though.
