They don't seem to feel that way. Especially with the opening weekend being the measure of how good a movie is going to do. Before, they'd advertise before and after the opening. They'd be content to let word of mouth spread. Now, they feel they must over hype the film to guarantee success (which doesn't always work). I think the first Batman movie in 1989 was the first to really over do it, the Bat symbol was on every bus & billboard. One has to try and ignore the hype or you'll never enjoy a movie again.

A new TV show works the same way, if the pilot gets big ratings the network can brag they have a hit.
