I liked the ending--even if it was a bit ambiguous. Here are my thoughts (and yes, I watched Jimmy Kimmel and I don't think any of the cast knew what was what either).

First of all, Jack landed on the island in a suit and closed his eyes (died) wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt. Therefore I suspect that he and the rest of the people did survive the crash and that the island itself did have some sort of magnetic powers which affected each person differently. Locke walked again, Bernard's wife Rose's cancer went away, etc. I think the submarine and the hocus pocus things that people had to do on the submarine (going to sleep, only certain coordinates, etc.) were just that, a scheme to keep anybody from easily finding the island. If the Dharma guys found it easily, so could anybody else.

I think that everybody eventually did die on the island but that the "infamous' six did get off and away to try to get back to their lives. Unfortunately their lives weren't all that great. The sideways things were just a distraction to show us what could have happened.

The smoke monster's "easy" death happened because he lost his power--the lights went out--no power to keep it charged up. Obviously the smoke monster was the evil force which had been kept in the center of the island's "lighted" cave until Jacob threw his brother down the probervial "rabbit hole." I suspect we could come up with all sorts of religious connotations for that.

Jack being the "good" force had to reinstate the light which could only be put out by Desmond who had been magnetically supercharged by Widmore and crew. I do appreciate the ScyFi aspect of this!

I know I'm forgetting a lot of things from a show that lasted all these seasons but it's hard to sift through the episodes to find the underlying theme or story. Too bad it's gone--I wonder what will come up next fall!
