The producers of the show somehow seem to have totally escaped from the "curse" of having the show go downhill once the two main characters have a romantic encounter together!

The show began with the premise that Michael and Fiona were ex-lovers who'd broken off their relationship because of the demands of his job as a spy. So, in a sense, there was never really "unfulfilled" sexual tension between them, as they had a history together. But during the pilot ep they both said that, this time around, their relationship was going to be strictly business.

Yet, exactly once in every season, they have a romantic encounter with each other. Then, the next episode, they both say it was a "mistake" and that things would be too complicated between them if they started sleeping together on a regular basis. Then they just go back to flirting and fighting!

Since the show's now in its fourth season and still riding high in the ratings (by cable TV standards),apparently having them "get together" sporadically hasn't drained the show of interest.
