Subject: Fall TV Schedule: FOX's New Shows

Fringe
Drama
Premieres: Tuesday, September 9

Premise: A young FBI agent has to team up with an eccentric, volatile scientist and his estranged genius son to solve crimes involving fringe science, the science of the supposedly impossible.

First Impressions: Alex Graves, who helmed the pilots for "Journeyman" and "The Nine," is one of TV's underrated directors and the clips from "Fringe" look stylish and handsome, instantly establishing a visual template for an intriguing thriller. Joshua Jackson conveys instant rogue charm and Lance Reddick's stern assertiveness is only slowly beginning to be recognized by non-"Wire" viewers. Anna Torv and John Noble's attempted American accents are going to take a bit of getting used to. Will "Fringe" find enough levity under the darkness to compliment its "House" lead-in? We're intrigued.

Stars: Anna Torv ("The Secret Life of Us"), John Noble ("24"), Joshua Jackson ("Dawson's Creek"), Lance Reddick ("The Wire"), Kirk Acevedo ("The Black Donnellys"), Jasika Nicole, Mark Valley

Do Not Disturb
Comedy
Premieres: Wednesday, September 10

http://www.zap2it.com/media/photo/2008-05/38891783.jpg"
Premise: An "Upstairs/Downstairs"-style look at the employees and guests at a ritzy New York hotel.

First Impressions: Niecy Nash is funny. Jesse Tyler Ferguson is funny. Jerry O'Connell is capable of being funny. The clips from "Do Not Disturb" are not particularly funny, even by the standards set by "'Til Death." FOX did, however, screen clips from possible midseason entry "Outnumbered," which delivered several laughs and gave off a strong "Malcolm in the Middle" vibe. "Outnumbered" is a single-camera comedy, while the laff-track (or sweetened audience laughter) in "Do Not Disturb" is already irksome.

Stars: Niecy Nash ("Reno 911!"), Jerry O'Connell ("Carpoolers"), Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("The Class"), Molly Stanton ("Twins"), Jolene Purdy, Brando Eaton

Sit Down, Shut Up
Animated Comedy
Premieres: Midseason

Premise: A group of teachers at a high school in a northeaster fishing town care more about their own disagreements and insecurities than about the welfare of their students. Based on an Australian format.

First Impressions: The mixture of live action backgrounds and traditional animation looks unique on a network that's become overwhelmed with Seth MacFarlane's particular style. It's a fantastic voice cast and we'll follow Mitch Hurwitz anywhere after "Arrested Development." That being said, the clips from the actual show were less funny than the behind the scenes banter with the actors and Hurwitz's own descriptions of the show.

Stars: Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Henry Winkler, Cheri Oteri, Will Forte, Regina King, Nick Kroll, Tom Kenny and Maria Bamford

Dollhouse
Drama
Premieres: Midseason

Premise: Echo is a Doll. She can be imprinted with a new personality and past to do all manner of jobs, but when she isn't on the job she has no memory of her own. But when Echo starts having memories, things get complicated for her, the other Dolls and the FBI agent trying to discover the truth about the Dollhouse.

First Impressions: Instantly atmospheric and notable for its production design and attractive cast, "Dollhouse" isn't instantly recognizable as Whedon-esque. From the clips shown to advertisers, Eliza Dushku is being used as the selling point and the clips show her swimming, dancing, speaking Spanish and waving a gun, so there's something for everybody. Like "Fringe," the pilot seems to be pepper with some weird American accents, though at least Olivia Williams gets to use her native tongue. You can't necessarily tell what the series is, but who are we kidding? We're so there.

Stars: Eliza Dushku ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Tahmoh Penikett ("Battlestar Galactica"), Fran Kranz ("Welcome to the Captain"), Olivia Williams ("Rushmore"), Harry Lennix ("24"), Dichen Lachman ("Neighbours"), Enver Gjokaj

The Cleveland Show
Animated Comedy
Premieres: Midseason

Premise: Peter Griffin's buddy Cleveland moves to Stoolbend, VA with his son, his high school sweetheart Donna and her daughter. The wacky neighbors include a loudmouth redneck couple, a British family seemingly stuck in the Victorian era and a family of bears in this "Family Guy" spin-off.

First Impressions: FOX didn't give us much to go on, but we like Cleveland and we like talking bears and one member of the Zap2it staff has already abandoned our home office to move to Virginia with a loved one from his past. He doesn't have wacky British family as his neighbor or his own '70s flavored opening theme song, but we're sure this one is going to hit close to home.

Stars: Mike Henry

Secret Millionaire
Alternative
Premieres: Midseason

Premise: A group of wealthy individuals go undercover in impoverished neighborhoods and learn valuable lessons about how the other half lives. At the end of their journey, each of the millionaires will give a donation of a minimum of $100,000 to a lucky recipient (or recipients).

First Impression: FOX's reality guru Mike Darnell is walking a tightrope here. Best case scenario, this is the sort of three-hanky sentimental reality stuff that only ABC does well. Worst case scenario, it's Life Stinks: The Reality Show, a condescending effort in which rich people spend a week or two discovering that not all poor people are welfare cheats, write checks that sound big to us but barely amount to an interest payment for them and then go back to their mansions thinking they're better people.
