I've never watched "Ugly Betty" so I don't know how much the fake soap opera in this ep resembled that. What was hilarious about it was that Shawn (main guy) had only very limited Spanish skills, but he kept being roped into scenes on this low-budget soap opera and he's just blurt something out in Spanish that really made *no* sense in the context of the scene and they'd do English language subtitles.
What makes it even funnier is that the guy who plays Shawn is billed in the opening credits as James Roday, but his actual last name is Rodriguez and he's from San Antonio, so there's a good chance that he probably actually speaks fluent Spanish! (Or at least better Spanish than he was speaking on this ep.)
