Mick was turned into a vampire by his wife 50 some odd years ago. Coraline came back into his life using this "cure" that her very old "aristocratic" family used during the French Revolution. This cure was made from some rare plant and kept her family of 7 vampires from demonstrating the physical attributes which were used to send other vampires to death via guillotine. His supposedly dead wife, now back from the dead, went to work as a photographer becoming friends with Beth (who Mick had saved from his wife after she had kidnapped Beth as a child.) Mick thought he had killed Coraline at that time in a fire because she had turned him and kidnapped Beth.

Anyhow, it was this temporary "cure" that had turned Mick into a human again but when Beth was kidnapped by a vampire doctor he knew he couldn't save her as a human, hence he had to become a vampire again. Mick's vampire friend turned him again but did apologize as he knew how important it was to Mick to feel like a human again even if it was only for a little while.
