I think the "CSI" shows just appeal to a lot of people, period. Their average audience age is undoubtedly older than it is for shows like "Veronica Mars" or "Supernatural" but the audience is so BIG that, overall, they have more young viewers than those shows do. Sort of the same thing for "American Idol." The average audience age for "AI" isn't particularly young, but because so *many* people watch it, they reach more young people than shows with smaller viewerships, even if those viewships are, on average, younger.
What I don't understand is WHY viewers in their 50s and 60s are considered "less desirable" by advertisers than those in their 20s, 30s and 40s.
My husband turned 50 a few months ago and we certainly have more "discretionary" income nowadays than we did when he was 30 or 40. And we'll probably have even more when he's 60. We're a lot more likely to go out to dinner or go to a movie nowadays than we were when our kids were small and we were struggling just to pay the mortgage and put food on the table. So why are advertisers *less* interested in reaching us now than they were 10 or 20 years ago?
