Subject: anyone remember The Rat Patrol?

S1 just came out on DVD, I rented the first disc of 8 episodes. Show ran from 1966-68, a half-hour action show (half-hour? can't imagine that now). Isaw it in reruns as a kid & loved it. I thought it would be lousy to see it as an adult as I did with SWAT but it wasn't so bad. They filmed the show in Spain & it's mostly exteriors. The plots are neat if standard. For a short show, they pack in lots of exposition.

For those who don't know, a WW2 show set in the north African desert. The 4 man team drive 2 jeeps behind enemy lines & take on daring sabotage missions against the Germans. The stories are based on the true life Long Range Desert Group which was part of the British army, made up of men who were Aussies & Kiwis. Of course, this show makes them Americans with one token Brit. They never seem to run out of ammo & they always hit their targets while only suffering slight wounds every now & then. Or they get stuck in the desert with no water & yet manage to survive.

They often fight a German captain named Dietrich who has a begrudging respect for them & a sense of honor. They have had to team up with him on occasion to survive the desert or to fight the treacherous Arabs. The Arabs come off bad here, no surprise. They help whoever pays the best & Arab women are shown as loose!!!!!

Due to the short eps, almost no character development. The Sarge & the Brit have personalities as does the German but the other 2 guys barely register. Each wears a different hat so we can distinguish them (berret, helmet, foreign legion cap & an NZ cowboy safari thingy). Some guest stars I saw were Ed Asner & Gavin McCleoud. They get a woman in there once in awhile, a hot German nurse to be seduced or to do the seducing. Historically inaccurate but hey its 60s tv.
