Heroes-anyone into this one?

I just realized this show is done by some comic book writers and has ordinary people suddenly given super hero type powers but shown "realistically". I was catching some of the last few minutes of episodes on the Sci-Fi repeats before Doctor Who came on and got interested although I'm way behind. Last night's ep was good.

Questions: how many people are the "heroes" and what can they do?

How many people are watching the heroes like the cheerleader's stepdad & the sexy young lady after the guys in NYC?

Is there any hints at what their purpose is or how they got their powers?

Darn, I was hoping not to get into a new show but looks like they got me again.
