Subject: Doctor Who round up for Stardoe

Well, I've now seen all of season 2 so here's my review:

I like David Tennant in the role but got to say I still miss Chris Eccleston. Guess there's no use hoping for something that's gone but why couldn't he do 2 seasons at least? Tennant seems much less dark than Chris & way more flippant. Rose has remained good & will be missed. I think they outdid every other companion departure with her goodbye to the Doctor. Very emotional.

I also found the writing this season to be a letdown after the excellent season 1. Still very Earth bound (or parallel Earth bound or New Earth bound). Just the one 2 parter was on a different planet, need more of that. I would like more 2 parters as I like that they have more time to build up the plot instead of rushing it & I love cliffhangers in the old tradition. The one offs are very hit & miss, this season had several that were mediocre.

Nice to have the Cybermen updated even if they eps weren't as good as the Dalek ones last year. But then the Cybermen were always #2. Great to see the Cybermen & Daleks face to face, a fanboy's dream. Once again, the threat faced at the season finale is wrapped up in a deus ex machina. And how many Daleks survived the Time War? After assuring us they were gone, they have turned up 3 times!!! And looks like they will again. Maybe no Daleks next year to keep them from getting boring. I'm hoping for the Master but heard Russell Davies doesn't like him. Could there be Time Lords out there if so many Daleks survived?

It's good to limit old adversaries to one a season. Don't want the show to overlode on nostalgia & be unfrriendly to new fans.

Here's my rankings on a 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent) scale (with 2 parters treated as one story):

The Christmas Invasion-6
New Earth-7
Tooth and Claw-6
School Reunion-7
The Girl In the Fireplace-8
The Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel-8
The Idiot's Lantern-6
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit-9
Love and Monsters-4
Fear Her-5
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday-8

The Imossible Planet/The Satan Pit was my favorite as it reminded me of old DW. The cliffhanger was great, better than the one for Army of Ghosts. School Reunion was just an OK ep made better by the presence of Sarah Jane & K9 (I'm not very excited for the spinoff). Girl in the Fireplace had an interesting idea going for it so it was my favcorite one off story. I hated Love & Monsters, painful to watch. Nice try but Elton & his friends were so annoying & the baddie was silly. Fear Her & Tooth and Claw & New Earth & The Idoit's Lantern didn't do much for me. Let's hope season 3 gets more gritty & less jokey.
