Subject: E-Ring! (SPOILERS if you haven't been watching)

I know that Jag was a big military hit BUT it has competition. I think it's nice to have another military themed show on television. E-Ring is definitely not Jag but it is becoming, I think, a very strong show inspite of anyone's comparisons or criticisms. It's definitely not a Jag-wannabe. Basically the lead character, Tisiniewski, was in covert-ops and now works in the Pentagon. His job is work to set up operations for extracting other agents or helpful locals.

This show has a clandestine romance, action in the form of covert rescue operations and a lot of mystery surrounding the characters' backgrounds. Dennis Hopper is really great in his role of a salty old Major. His secretary has her own story (her husband was killed while in the military) and is able to get things arranged for Tisiniewski. Tis has been living with a CIA agent who was part of his covert-ops team but moved out when she told him to. The only reason that happened was that someone "higher up" meaning her boss is dirty. Tis knows this guy is bad, has confronted him and now this dirty CIA guy has started a bogus investigation under the guise of looking for classified information leaks. Tis and crew had managed to get rid of some of the "bad guy" legislative and CIA underlings but they still haven't been able to get to her boss. She broke off the relationship to try to stop her boss from going after Tis, was shot and now she is supposedly dead after the assination attempt. The investigation has been pushed forward and Tis has been suspended. End of part one.

In next weeks p2 ep. we know that Tis won't stand still for this. He still has ties to the other two team members and they are now working on going after the assassins who she had identified with initials on her window. The initials stood for a covert op they had done and she wrote them in her blood. Usually that doesn't mean much but she used "CW" which of course caught my attention. Supposedly she is dead but we never saw the body--only an empty bed.

Other than the two-part thing, this show is easy to follow once you get the characters figured out. I hadn't been able to decide whose side the lady lawyer was on but I think she's part of the "good guys" and takes her job seriously. The Major likes to get things done and his latest under-the-radar thing was to get Tis's secret ops identity documents which were stored in a briefcase, out of storage. Since they had taken his passport along with his ID card, etc. he needs these documents to finish the job. Apparently his team had missed killing one bad guy who is now responsible for the assasination attempt and now he is their target.

I only bring this up because there are similarities to XFiles that weren't obvious at first. I have found that this show is not just a simple military good guys vs. bad guys. Instead it is much more complex in that we have a romance, a conspiricy with high level creeps, bad guys, unknown good guys, good guys willing to bend the rules, and a lot of suspense and action. There are episodic stories that you can just watch and enjoy. What I am enjoying, now that I have figured this one out, is the combination of a "mythology" (if you like) combined with the weekly action-suspense story. No aliens in this show but there are plenty of other shows this year which have their own form of little green men.
