Subject: My new "curse" in regard to tv series. . .

As several of you might remember, I've often joked about the fact that I'm the "kiss of death" to new TV series, as the *VAST* majority of shows I've begun watching with their Pilot ep have been cancelled before the end of their first season.
Apparently, however, my power has mutated. I no longer kill of the entire series but I DO, apparently, cause the lead actress to bail within a season or two. This is especially true of actresses who play law enforcement agents of some sort on CBS dramas.
The evidence: during the fall of 2003, I started watching "NCIS" with its pilot ep; this May, Sasha Alexander (Agent Caitlin Todd) was written off the show in the season finale. This January, I started watching "Numb3rs" with its pilot ep; by late May, Sabrina Lloyd (Agent Terry Lake) was no longer on the show (that one really perturbed me, because they never gave *any* explanation for her departure from the series. . .apparently they just thought the audience "wouldn't notice" that the lead actress had left the series).
This summer, I've started watching an occaional ep of "CSI:NY" and now I just learned that Vanessa Ferliton (Officer Aidan Burn) is leaving the series after the second episode of the second season.
I think this is why I prefer books to TV. Characters rarely just get up and walk off the pages!!
Honestly, I can understand why an actor or actress might choose to leave a series after four or more seasons (i.e. I can sympathize with DD leaving XF after the seventh season), but I really don't know why actresses would want to leave highly-rated TV series after only a season or two (and, in all three cases, it was apparently their choice to leave). I thought there were thousands of actresses in Hollywood who were just absolutely *desperate* to have regular work. Yet, apparently, once they get a role they get tired of it within a year or two.
