The city of Buffalo is putting the building up for bids from what I was reading. And Canisius College basketball once played there in the 1930’s that is where I got the idea from in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo

So what that they played there in the 1930's. There isn't a person alive who actually attended a game. You could pick any run down ready to be demolished building and make the same lame argument. Neither is going to happen but why would it be a better idea to renovate/rebuild some falling down building than to build a brand new one???

the Broadway auditorium was the home court of our Griffins until Memorial Auditorium opened in 1942. At that time and for several years later the Aud was next to Madison Square Garden as the best facility in the entire country. Bob MacKinnon turned down Notre Dame because he wanted to play before big crowds at the Aud. How things have changed. I'm convinced that improvements to the KAC is the answer. Let's go Griffs!!!

Cager
I am very curious as to what 'improvements to the KAC' can/could be made.

Tear it down, rebuild and include a practice gym so the men and women can practice at the same convenient time. If that means playing at Buffalo State or some other makeshift facility for a season, so be it.

So one again - how do you propose they pay for this demolition and construction? They have a practice gym. Why is it important for the men and women to practice at the same time?

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Re: That is an Incredib -- left-coast griff, Tue, March 28 2023, 12:36:13

Obviously it would be paid for through fundraising. Duh.

Two gyms so the teams can practice at the same time. Maybe both teams want to practice at 1 or 2 p.m. so it's convenient academically for their student-athletes to attend class in person in the morning. In-person class attendance has been proven to be far more conducive to success than online learning.

That's impossible without a practice gym.

Two gyms also gives you another place to practice when the volleyball team has gym priority when it is in season in October and November.

Two gyms also gives the players a place to shoot, etc., when the main gym floor is being used for other functions.

Fundraising huh? You make it sound so simple. And where specifically is that kind of money coming from? Just from "fundraising" I guess.

They have a practice gym now! Duh!

No, it's not simple at all. But that's what it will take. Fund-raising. Finding new revenue sources or encouraging existing sources to increase their donations.

Finding a company that wants to increase its visibility through naming rights. Finding an unexpected donor; did you have the Pegulas pegged as the new owners of the Bills?

The college has professionals who do this for a living. And if they knew where the money was coming from, as you suggest, they could just ask for it.

And yes, I know they have a practice gym. Which is why I said the new arena must have one too. You're the one who cluelessly asked why both teams might want to practice at the same time.

Me clueless? LOL. You went on and on about the advantages of having two gyms. As if it was some novel idea. If you meant, what you claim you meant, why not just say "have two gyms like they do currently". Why would you create a list of positives? And thanks for pointing out that in-person learning is better than online. Who knew???

There have been two brand new basketball arenas built by MAAC schools in the last 25+ years and Quinnipiac built their's before they joined the conference. So really just Fairfield who built a 51 million dollar arena following the receipt of the largest donation ever given to the school by Leo Mahoney. And Canisius is now going to raise 50 millionish dollars with the help of an "unexpected donor". Sounds reasonable. Do you have a timetable for this little fundraising effort?

PS: As to your question, "Do you have a timetable for this little fundraising effort?" no, I don't. Usually higher-up administrators handle those type of announcements, not alums on the other side of the country.

(And it will be a big fundraising effort, BTW.)

Also, for all we know, the effort may already be underway, behind the scenes. Most major capital construction fundraising drives start with a quiet/silent period, where a significant amount is pledged before the campaign goes public, creating momentum for future donors to give once than plan is publicly announced.

But I'm sure you already knew that.

Finding an "unexpected donor" was just one possible source, as my post clearly states. Not the only source.

"Finding new revenue sources or encouraging existing sources to increase their donations.

Finding a company that wants to increase its visibility through naming rights. Finding an unexpected donor."

Not sure what your problem is.

My problem is you spewing this nonsense of them building a 50 million dollar arena (and obviously a practice gym) with absolutely no evidence of anything like this ever having been considered. Actually, the contrary is true. They are not building a new arena!

Once again, totally clueless.

I never said they were going to build a new arena. Previously on this thread a poster named D asked, "I am very curious as to what 'improvements to the KAC' can/could be made."

My answer was, tear it down and build a new arena. That's clearly the best option. But I NEVER said it was what the college would choose to do.

And with that, I'm done wasting my time with you.

LMFAO! So building a practice gym, playing at Buff St. for a year, finding an "unexpected donor", selling naming rights, etc. These were just suggestions for if and when the college decides to build a new arena? But now you don't expect any of these things to actually happen. Outstanding insight! Thanks.

Yep. So if they do, if a Leo Mahoney shows up, you have an action plan. Smart people already know this.

Aaaaahhhh. That's quite an intricate plan. Make sure you send it to Stoute and Maher if you haven't already. Thank God they'll have you as a resource. Any other plans for things that will never happen that you'd like to share?

Yeah, I also don't anticipate getting flat tire, but I have a spare just in case.

I don't expect the power to go off at night, but I have candles and a flashlight if they do.

I no longer live in WNY. But when I did I packed a survival kit in my trunk in case in case I got caught in a blizzard, even though I didn't anticipate that happening.

I have fire insurance for my house, even though I don't anticipate that either. And car insurance, even though I don't expect to get into an accident.

Smart people prepare for "things that will never happen." Because sometimes they do. Do you think the development guys at Fairfield went to work one day thinking, "Today's the day Leo's going to give us millions."

Oh my God this guy! Might be the lamest analogies ever.

I'm sure Canisius has a rough idea of what they would do if 50 million dollars got dumped in their lap but I also highly doubt that they sit around discussing it or giving it any real thought. And no I'm pretty sure Fairfield knew Leo was going to give them a lot for a long time. And during that long time, they formulated an actual plan. That was the time they planned. Do you honestly think Canisius has this master plan with a post-it on it saying "When we get our Leo, this is what we will do!"? But until we get that money, we will just continue to plan and plan and plan. And while I'm at it, I'll make sure I have candles in my drawer in case the power goes out.

So you want us to believe that the point of your endless rambling posts about a new arena - even though you say you NEVER said they would actually build a new arena - was to simply share with the people on this board the value of planning and preparing?

Anyone who has season tickets, goes to games, talks with others, lives in this area, etc. knows damn well that a new arena is not even on the radar. So why even bring it up as any type of an option? Real or imagined.

What am I trying to say?

* That spending millions to refurbish the KAC is putting lipstick on a pig, and a stopgap measure at best.

* That someday CC will need a new arena if it wants its basketball program to regain MAAC/regional prominence, like Iona's.

* That the school should have a plan in place for when that day arrives.

* Why bring it up? Because it has to happen at some point.

Some of us can imagine/dream of a future when we're not playing in a high school-level facility.

D, I believe it was just a few years ago that there was talk of removing all the offices on the level of the KAC, and adding much needed rest rooms, a concession area, and a Griff apparel store.. I believe the Hall of Fame area would remain as is. They really have to do something for the softball, and baseball facilities if they intend to be attractive and competitive . The Griffs are quickly falling behind. Perhaps better fields could be constructed where the parking ramp was located. I don't believe at this point a huge parking lot is needed. Go Griffs!!!
