Subject: People Are Leaving NYS In Droves
In reply to: Merger 's message, "Medaille & Trocaire" on Thu, April 06 2023, 3:25:58

And that doesn't help the college admission situation at all. And not all of those heading from NY to Texas, Florida, Tenn, etc, are retirees. Many are taking their children and getting them the hell out of NYS where there is no future for them.

I retired, and got the hell out of that State, and am now in the FREE State of Florida. None of my kids would even consider going to a school in NYS.

The future for the private schools in NY is BLEAK. Who's going to pay the higher taxes that's coming in the near future ? How are people going to pay their high energy, gas , grocery and property bills ? Rents are going up and up !

These issues are all related to the college issues in NYS.

No disrespect for Medaille and Trocaire, but Canisius is an entirely different level of school academically. She already is moving in the right direction again under President Steve, 1.3M in a modest fundraiser with a goal of $500K? BG hasn't even met the guy personally yet, but IMO we got the right President. He's not looking for a merger, he's for her growth on her own merits, IMO. Jesuit and since 1870 by the way.

Trust me President Steve realizes that our long term future depends on mergers / acquisitions. Buffalo is not big enough to be home for all these schools. Enrollment is plummeting even in the local high schools. Trocaire has programs in healthcare that Canisius should have had 20 years ago. They missed the boat. Medaille would give us a bigger footprint. We need to think big picture. You need increase enrollment at all levels - under grad & graduate. You also need to attract more kids from outside of WNY. Make every effort possible of shedding the identity of a commuter school. Acquiring space & having a bigger campus footprint helps to build a different sense of energy & community. You finally have an open foot of real estate now that the parking ramp is down. Be smart Canisius. Do something with it. President Steve knows this. Go Griffs!

Mergers no, acquisitions yes. That means growing the campus. Certainly the demolition of the parking ramp presents that opportunity as does taking the Jefferson block across E.Delavan off the market as well as wise development of the MSJ property. You're right about enrollment and outside WNY. Advertise, recruit get the word out, win more games and ,yes, Lets Go Griffs!
