There has already been an enormous amount of litigation and in no universe would the Florida's of the world now agree to the cost of your Walter Clayton scenario when they currently can do the same thing for free - and have the backing of the legal system to do so.

Clayton received 1.2 million in NIL money from Florida. In your formula, Florida would have owed Iona 4.8 million - likely causing them to balk at bringing him in and then you'd be right back to the player argument (that they have already won) that their mobility and earnings are being restricted.

OK, change the formula to something that doesn't restrict movement but pays Iona for the two years of playing time the kid had to develop his skills...something that might not have happened riding the bench as a 1st year at UF. By the way, the kid grew up 150 miles from UF...they could have had him if they wanted him then.

Now we may be on to something.

A guy much smarter than me suggested during a conversation he and I were having not too long ago a buyout or transfer fee that would be agreed to in advance between the school and the player on an annual basis. So maybe the best player on the Canisius roster has a 40k transfer fee. When Auburn comes calling, they would pay the transfer fee from the cans and bottles they return from a home football game and the kid gets 25% and Canisius gets 75%. The kid gets initial pocket money and Canisius gets 30k. The kid is allowed to move and Auburn can then pay him whatever they choose to in NIL money. Canisius would have 30k to pay NIL to current players or go out on to the open market and pay the transfer fee on another kid. I'm sure I'm missing some things but the basic premise would seem to work and it wouldn't involve ungodly amounts of money, wouldn't restrict movement in any material way and wouldn't restrict earnings for the player.

Well, we're not going to solve the problem here but it's clear that 1) kids shouldn't be restricted from transferring; 2) the compensation formula should be predictable (KISS) and 3) (in my opinion) the higher up a kid moves the more compensation that should be paid. If UF had a budget that allowed it to pay 1.4 mil. for WC Jr. they Iona should have received a boat load of money. Otherwise, the MAAC will always be a one team in and a 15/16 seed.

It's already a given that the MAAC is a one bid 15/16 seed league.

And as I said previously, I don't think Power 4 schools would balk at a capped 40-50k transfer fee because that amount of money is insignificant to them and it might be worth it to have mid-majors serve as their feeder programs. They are not, however, going to agree to pay mid-majors millions of dollars when the justice system has resoundingly said they don't have to.
