Hi Sims,

We know, to varying degrees, what the giants have. But I don't think you've considered what they don't have. Please, don't think I'm facetious. Some big retailers (bricks -- Sam Goody & web-- Amazon) offer used CD's. But I don't think the bricks & mortar giants do. They also don't have tapes or CD's from local "undiscovered acts." What they'll probably never have is YOU.

Possibility 1
In Manitowoc County in Wisconsin, a radio station & some other sponsors teamed up with 2 people who are show producers (not famous). They're promoting a talent show/contest for Wisconsin residents (amateurs).
To give you an idea about possible sponsors, you can check this web page - http://www.lakeshoresrisingstars.com/sponsors.html

It hasn't happened yet, so I don't know if it'll be successful, though very few things are highly successful the first time. The population of the whole county is less 100,000. So, it doesn't always have to be in a big city.

It might work well between 2 big cities, so residents can travel a little & participate or be in the audience.

If you team up with local talent & promoters, together you can develop exposure for & establish yourselves. Hopefully, you can use this to start bringing in some money. It won't be big bucks in a short time. But if you do it with the right people & principles, you'll build a strong foundation.
As Jay Abraham would say, it'd be 1 pillar in your Parthenon.
This can be used to enhance the next possibility.

Possibility 2
Amateur talent searches can launch careers. By moving quickly after winners achieve their new status, CD's & tapes can be produced & more easily/ profitably promoted than after the status fades or without the talent show. Example- "The First CD/Tape From ____, Winner of the 2006 Lakeshore's Rising Stars."

This would keep memories of the show alive which is essential if the show would be an annual event. It could help the event become more successful in the future. This would make it more likely to be noticed by rich & famous show-biz types. This would increase the probability of bigger success.

Many times, success builds on success & leads to more like this topic leads to the next possibility.

Possibility 3
Multiple streams of income are important to achieve a potentially continual money supply, even if some streams are disrupted. But if you do a Pareto-like analysis, you'd find some streams consume more time & energy than others. Some streams would be more profitable than others. Unfortunately, the most resource consuming streams, probably won't be the most profitable.

But you might have to make those determinations AFTER you've done them for a while. THEN you could determine which to emphasize or possibly stop.

Profitability doesn't have to be measured only monetarily. Maybe a talent show wouldn't directly increase cash-flow. One Example- show sponsors might be able to coax show winners to make personal appearances after they're famous & popular.

Of course, there's the possibility of gossip mongers stirring trouble for these celebrities. This trouble could cast a shadow over sponsors, but it probably wouldn't be much of a problem.

Whatever celebrities are accused of, some fans still love them.

How long is "too long" to wait for sales from your marketing efforts?
It depends -- when do you need the results?
When will you need the profit?
If you need it now, let's get started.
