Hi dunbar,

Um, question: Are we talking about beer or hard liquor? It's not quite clear from your post, and the two things are not exactly identical, though I get your point.

Not to be snarky about this, but maybe we should keep in mind that George Clooney is a celebrity, not a saint. I mean, I adore the guy, but he doesn't need my permission to live his life and make his choices.

Like a lot of top-flight celebs, GC obviously gets lots of endorsement offers and takes some of them because they pay extravagantly well for not too much time and effort on his part. My best guess is that he endorses that particular product--beer--because he likes it. He enjoys drinking and makes no real secret of it, like a lot of other grown-up people. And while he is known to be extremely generous, giving huge amounts of money to a number of worthy causes, I can't say I agree that the product he endorses obligates him to give 100% of the endorsement money to any person or cause. The point about being charitable is that you give because you want to not because you have to.

I agree it's true that alcohol can be a destructive force in many people's lives, but it absolutely is NOT true that every person who enjoys beer or alcohol is on the road to ruin. Some folks can handle it and, sadly, some cannot. I hope I'm not coming off as flip or glib about this issue, because I don't mean to.

On a related subject, smoking kills. I don't smoke and I do request-- sometimes insist-- that people not smoke around me, but on the other hand I recognize that others have the right to that particular habit if they know the risk and they're willing to take it. Though it seems like science fiction, there are actually societies in this world that dictate to its citizens what they can and cannot do, supposedly for their own good, and they keep their people in line with brutal efficiency. I don't think I'd want to live in such places, would you?

Oh, and getting back to George--he's also endorsed automobiles, and we know cars can be very lethal machines in the wrong hands at the wrong times. Given that product's potential for mayhem and death, should he not do car commercials also?

Just a thought.
