Yeah, when you read Wolcott it becomes immediately clear that he's no fan of what passes for conservatism these days--everyone keeps saying that conservatism used to be about fiscal restraint and keeping the federal government out of everyone's bedrooms, though I'm not sure I really believe that...

And apparently the thing with GC and the neo-conservatives is that, the fact of George's enormous Hollywood popularity plus his being proudly liberal in his social-political leanings (and his willingness to speak out--something a LOT of supposed Hollywood liberals won't do for fear of antagonizing audiences thus endangering the box office bottom line) makes him an irresistable target to right-wingers looking to raise their own profiles and/or rally the conservative base.

Wolcott did make the point that there is a danger of people getting so exercised about GC's politics that his multi-talent as an actor-writer-producer-director (whew!) risks being shoved into the background. George Clooney isn't running for public office, after all, so you have to wonder about these media and political types who find his liberalism such a threat.
