Subject: Question about Gold/Platinum Records.....

Hi!
I have a question.
Let's say an album is released, and it doesn't go platinum or even gold for a while. (A year or more) Is it still considered a gold or platinum album? In other words, does it have to sell so many units in a specific time frame in order to be called gold or platinum?
Does the artist get the nifty framed album? Or is that just a special award for a fast selling album?
Just wondering...
