For the saber blade, I add a layer and cover the prop blade in white, then basically apply two more layers with progressivley increased gaussian blur. The less blurred level has the main colour of the saber 'aura', then the most blurry level is a dimmer version of the same colour.

The blaster bolts I made with a very pale yellow core, then treated it like a red saber blade.

Finally the lens flare I made myself with a Photoshop plug in that lets you build your own. The flares appear for three frames at a time, 110% brightness first frame, then down 30% on subsequent frame (with one exception).

I'm interested in doing more of this, it's very satisfying to see it all in motion when you've spent ages hand editing lots of still frames!

Going to have to look at 3D rendering for ships, etc, then try a bit of green-screening :)
