Phil,
Something I just tried, should work for you too.

1) Upload the photos to your karoo webspace with ftp.
2) Telnet to Tornado.
3) From Tornado use ftp to access your karoo webspace: user@tornado:~>ftp homepages.karoo.net
4) Then use the ftp GET command to transfer the files you need.

I too have been unable to make a direct ftp connection from home to Tornado, but the above method works around the problem.
