Blogs are popular for any application that uses time-ordered entries submitted by a simple form. No HTML skill needed. Sure, they're not necessarily interesting, but that's not the point is it? It's about unconstrained freedom of expression. Whether anyone reads it is up to them and largely irrelevant. Blogs make web content creation almost foolproof. Anything that does that is good because it takes away the monopoly on media production enjoyed throughout history by the rich and powerful.
