Date Posted: 953589827PST The Good; We caught 32lb Halibut Sunday morning. The Bad: It turned out to be the only decent fish of the day. The Ugly: Nasty fog most of the day. The Story: Mike broke down on his "We're not going fishing until the old boat is sold!" proclamation. The weather has been so good we just had to go out. Since the bites been south we decided to head down to our old stomping grounds in the south bay. Hit the ramp at 6:00 picked up bait (east receiver gave us a really FULL full scoop of squid) and headed south. Were on the secret spot by 7:00 (nice to have a boat that really moves) dropped some bait down. Wham: Mike hooks up. Asked him what he thought and he kinda shrugged: said Ehhhh feels kind of funny like a sand shark. I grabbed the gaff just to be sure, then this large thing comes up. Big brown almost like a old lid to a 55 gallon drum. Soon as I saw it I was doing that Oh my God I'm not going to miss this one....or else thing in my head. It was coming straight up mouth wide open. (I hate that) She had that any minute I'm going to shake the hook loose look. Slid the gaff just below the gills and stuck her. 32lbs of flat fish on the deck. Stomped her head and threw her in the box. Now after that you might think the rest of the day might be a little anti-climatic. It was. We should of opened some beers and headed in. We fished very hard for the rest of the day for one short and two smallish Sandies. Hit all our spots for Nada. Fog came in big time, when it cleared we were at twin roads in 60 feet of water. Kind of funny to find out we were just inside of the main part of the fleet. Evidently the Redondo Special and New Del Mar got a few a little deeper. Couple of thoughts: With the full moon they may have been feeding at night, maybe we caught the tail end of the bite. It always seems that when we catch a good fish early we're in for a slow day. Of coarse it does take some of the pressure off. I spent about half the day napping off my Saint Patricks day.... UUUuuuuUUUUUhhhhhmmmm events. (Irish you know.... James Patrick Day) Another thing: Since we picked up the fish in 55 feet of water we concentrated on 50 to 60 depths. The butts in the bay may have moved out till the next grunion run. Maybe we should of tried deeper. Never know but the Payboats were out further at the end of the day. An how about that fog. It doesn't scare me but man It sure makes it hard to set up consistent drifts. Well there you have it. One Good fish and very much worth the effort. I tell ya: Mike was due, and that's our best on the boat to date. Not bad for a foggy day in March. Gotta love the So Cal winters.
