I'm not sure if you know it, but: a number of states have placed minimum size limits on their sharks this year. California wasn'nt one of them. The limits in some cases wouldn't help anyway. Texas instigated what I believe is a twenty eight inch limit on all sharks caught in it's waters. Since many sharks are almost that big or bigger at birth it's hardly makes a difference. At least it's something though. Locally in Southern California the threshers are heating up.

I saw this shark on the Coastal Kayak Fishing Board.

This Pup is maybe a few weeks old at best.

Now I don't like to tell anyone how to fish, and by the tone of the post I can tell that the angler doesn't know much about sharks. Still I think it's important to remind everyone a few thngs. Threshers have a very limited reproduction cycle. A female thresher only bears two young per season. These sharks emerge fully developed and ready to feed, somewhere around six to eight feet. Very young threshers are about the size of the one in the pic at birth. They have kind of a for-shortened look to their face, that and the extra large eyes mark this one as a very young pup maybe a few weeks old. Like I said I don't like to tell guys how to fish, This guy had a right to keep it, but I really feel it's a good idea to release these little pups. It's selfish on my part. I want the larger versions around.

This Thresher:

Is one I caught off Rocky Point a few years back.

I kept it and would probably do so again. It was a tremendous fish and put up a great fight. I think it's up to personal choice which do you want. Big or small. Little sharks may be fun to catch, but Big ones are the real challange. Not to mention what we need if we want T-sharks around in the future. Have a good time hunting the sharks, it should be a good season, but try to remember this is not an unlimited resource. I'd say set a limit for yourself. I know that I'll be releasing all threshers under 100 pounds this year.

Release for the future.
Tight lines Jim
