Jim, Where exactly is this Avila sling thing you guys are talking about? Does the sling actually lift the boat off the trailer? Never heard of that....Please enlighten me !!! Is a 17 foot bayrunner too small in your opinion to go out in up there? Even if you think so were there any bayrunners out there ? Some people think I'm crazy taking my boat out to the 371 but I do it all the time with no worries ! I'm sure I could do it out there.
Love them big Albies!!!!

Here's some info:

I'm sure if you know your rig you could fish up there. It doaes get snotty though. Our day was great. The seas were no worse than an average day out of O-side. The wind does whip around Point San Luis and there was a bad reflection chop. Basically if you can run the first ten it flattens out pretty good. It is notarious for bad weather. Watch the marine forcasts closely, but you already know that if you fish the 371
The fish were almost straight uphill so we ran out at only about fifteen. Norms boat is very sea worthy but stil just and eighteen footer. We made it to the fish in less then an hour. Home was all downhill so getting back was just a nice ride.

The sling is like a haul out-hoist. Twin 6 inch straps hooked to a rolling hoist on a BIG I beam roll frame. The thing is huge. The guy operating it is a real pro. Made fast work of it all. A few things: watch the guy in front of you so you can learn the proto-call. On a standerd trailer they strap the bow first, lift it up then slide in the rear strap. Lower down the bow hook the rear strap then lift the whole thing. Regulars notch the bunks of their trailers creating a gap for the rear strap. Saves a step and I think they get a discount.

Most guys up there were fishing old beat up rigs in the 20 to 25 range. I did see a number of smaller boats though. One guy was fishing Solo in a 18 Mako. There was also three guys in an 18 whaler. Though I didn't see a 17 Bayrunner I saw a bunch of the things in general. I guess there some kind of dealership at the hoist. I must of saw a dozen BR's sitting around. Some with motors some still unrigged. I also saw several fishing in the 20 range.

Avila is just south of Morro around the point, north of Santa Maria and Pismo beach. You can't miss it. It's the only place Hightway 1 comes down to the beach between Santa Barbra channel and Monterey Theres a very small exit for Avila beach. Take it.

Tight lines Jim
