Subject: White seabass at rocky point!!!

Turns out there's a good white seabass bite going on over at rocky point. I missed it cause I went down and around to fish halibut: should of stayed a little closer to home. Here's how it was according to FloMar or John quoted from the Allcoast board:

Well after I finally decided I wouldn’t fish today, and just rest, I get a call from someone
asking me to fish with them but was not up to go. Anyway, after a ½ hour of talking I
was convinced to go fish Flatties. Met Robert Young/’Locals Only’ at the Marina Del Rey
launch ramp at 5:30. Day starts with some guy holding up the gate-arm and drove right-in
gratis. Loaded the stuff and before we could get out, Miguel from Shaw’s Marine (SPAM)
tells Robert to fish the WSB at Rocky Point. I said not in this lifetime, but the info was being
thrown around by many at the ramp so I said let’s see if we can get Squid 1st, and if we can
get it I’ll think about it knowing full well there would be no Squid. Huh, Shows what I know!

We inquire on the radio and the MDR dock says come on in we got a FULL LOAD at 4 this
morning. I thought bitchin Squid, but now Robert will bug me to fish WSB, garrrrreat! Well
then I said lets see if it’s too foggy 1st and he says we’ll just follow Miguel down to Rocky.
I said easy big boy. Hit the channel entrance ….. DAMMIT ….. I can see Rocky Point.

We Paper/Scissors/Rock and I was squished! DAMMIT again! We got down to Hermosa
in front of the ChartHouse and the birds were working major. We stopped and Robert proceeds
to Hook a Thresher that runs right under Miguels boat “Glass Cutter’ and 5 minutes after the
jump the fish snaps the line. We proceed to see FireBall Squids on the meter and then daytime float.
We fished the Grumpy’s catching maybe 10 or so in the 3-4 pound range, and even on the bounced
Iron. They were all over it! So we motored over to Rocky Point and found daytime Squid everywhere
West of PaddleBoard Cove and saw major volume of WSB on the meter. It was like watching a video
with all the Orange air-bladders coming under the boat. I liked what I saw, motored around looking
for what I thought would be a good Rock to anchor over, and Kur-Plunk the anchor went.

Filthy dirty water, no current, but Squid floating everywhere, birds going stupid, and 20 boats within
a Square block area, and then the Party Boats showed up. Not much happening for an hour or so
and then we were bum-rushed. Robert’s 1st rod is smashed peeling line and then rocking-him.
Oh #$@!^&#$)*(&%@&(!!!!! Then I’m racked and boat a 27 inch WSB, released unharmed.
Decide to start cutting the frozen popsicles I’d brought for Halibut, and this would keep the
fish under the boat for hours to come. Then my other pole is hammered and I was rocked or
scraped on something. Couldn’t stop the fish with 30# test and a 4/0. DAMMIT once again!

Maybe another hour goes by and here they come again, Robert hangs one and 5-10 minutes
later gaff-shot by MOI (fr) and we are on the board. Solid 14 pound fish weighed on the
Non-digital Non-Rusty handheld scale. Roberts other pole screams and he boats a short WSB
about 26 inches. Now I’m fit to be tied because he drops again and another 26 inch fish.

Miguel comes drifting by and I said drop it right next to me no-problem, he said can’t
I gotta go check the HOOP-NET. I thought yeah right, until he comes back 15 minutes
later with 4 nice Bugs mid-morning and then later tells me how they cooked a couple
up and had Lobster Burritos. Now I’m really bent, and told him we’d trade Roberts fish
for ……………. BAM and I’m slammed ….. 5 minutes later 9 pound fish on the boat.
I never thought the fish would weigh 7, but the gut was jacked with Squids. Fish was
only 31 inches long, but ate like a 40 pounder, damn PIG.

Over the next couple hours we’d periodically put a short WSB on the boat, a few
very nice Calicos up to 5 pounds and a few Sand Bass to 5 pounds (all released!).
We saw a couple 25 pound WSB caught and we were told of the 50+ pound Yellowtail
caught the day before. We saw a couple nice Halibut caught by guys on the anchor,
but we had no-more Legal WSB. Robert was rocked 3 more times by something
which we believe to be WSB also, but we will never know. We left about 2 and headed
towards the barn when I got the urge to make a Halibut drift at the ‘GREEN-SPOT’
(Manhattan Beach). I caught 1 short, but the wind was ripping making it tough to stay
down at all so we called it a day at 3 and headed in with a couple Legal WSB for our
efforts, 15 nice Sandies, 7 or 8 very nice Calicos, and 8 short WSB.

All day long I wanted to head to Trancas, but we never got there because each time I’d
go to pull the anchor we’d catch a short WSB and hang around a little longer. BTW the
LIVE SQUID was HUGE in size, and MDR will easily have this bait for a couple days.
Anybody want to make Squid setup in front of the ChartHouse in Hermosa, Redondo
Canyon, or out at Rocky Point west of Paddleboard Cove. We saw all this Squid in
50-60 feet, just amazing IMO. Not to mention the weather was GREAT! We had our
T-shirts off mid-morning and we were baking in the Sun. It was an extremely relaxing
and theraputic day for me considering I wasn’t even interested mid-evening last night.

Here’s a couple FUNKY FloMar Polaroids PICS. Hard to believe today was a Mid
November day. Watch out for the Dredge at the mouth of the MDR breakwater and
all the buoys that I think were strategically placed by a 5 year old, making life miserable
getting out in the morning, and back in during the afternoon. Man did I eat some great
Albacore today (Seared Cajun), and boiled on it all-day! Life is good! Tired, and time for
night-night very soon. Great company as usual with Robert! Seaya all. John.
