The following is an email received(this morning)from Dr. Ellen Pikitch(who had appeared in the "EXTRA" shark finning/tagging
national television segment which was initially broadcast throughout the USA last December):

Forwarded:

Dear Jim and Bob(Endreson):

Hi! I just finished reading the article you wrote in Discover Diving.
Good job! Very well done.
Thanks for letting me know about it and helping me get a copy.

I wasn't aware of the Tasmania shark decline, octopus explosion and then lobster decline you mention in the story. Is that connection well
documented? and, if so, where can I get the details? When I get asked
"Why care about sharks?" (A question I seem to get way too often for my taste) - I usually give the "Apex predator" answer - but it would be better to have some actual examples that show how things go awry when sharks are removed from the ecosystem.

Keep up the good work.

Bob - you mentioned Steve Berkeley in your message to me. We have
talked about collaborating on a bycatch project with Dan Erickson, who
works with me and is based in Oregon - but are still in the talking
stages. As you may know, Dan and I have nearly 15 years of experience
solving bycatch problems in other fisheries, and we are keen to apply
our expertise to sharks and other pelagics.
We appreciate your offer to help, and will keep you posted.

Best Wishes,

Ellen
