Hi Jim, yes we will get the reproductive track, stomach and vertebrae for that
shark. It was caught by an angler out of Dana Point. John Ugoretz at CDFG made
arrangements. We already have same from two other sharks. This material goes
into our aging and reproductive lab for life table analysis. Yes the HI finning
situation has heated up significantly in the last couple weeks.

Hi David,

Who caught that 1109 pound mako off Santa Barbara Island recently? I
heard that the organs were brought to you for research purposes?

Did you get a chance to read the article (about the brutal shark fin
trade based in Hawaii which is depleting the shark population off
California as well) that Bob Endreson (from
http://www.westpacfisheries.net) and I had co-written for the August
issue of "Discover Diving" magazine. If not, you can still read it by
accessing the following URL (it takes a while to load though!):

http://www.westpacfisheries.net/genocide1.html

I just read (in the October issue of "Discover Diving" magazine) that
the shark finning article had "raised the roof" with regard to
international response that resulted from the article. It is nice to
know that Bob and I made some kind of difference with such.

Also, if you get a chance to watch, that "The Aquanauts" television
series made its debut on the Animal Planet channel last Monday. New
episodes will be airing each weekday (from last Monday) at 4:30 PM (and
then repeating each weeknight at 11:30 PM) on the USA west coast. On the
USA east coast, a new episode of "The Aquanauts" airs each weeknight at
7:30 PM (and repeats each night at 2:30 AM):

http://www.discovery.com/sched/domestic/episode/35/673388003.html

In Hawaii, "The Aquanauts" is broadcast daily at 2:30 PM and at 9:30 PM
on the Animal Planet channel. For broadcast time of "The Aquanauts" in
other areas, access the "TV" link via http://www.yahoo.com.
