She nuzzles him lovingly, ignoring the foal's pleading cries. She would give him a chance, she decided. She would get him strong, and then abandon him in the mares' lands for another mare to adopt. She knew they couldn't have a straggler in the herd, that was someone elses problem. She walks over and stands beside, encouraging him to nurse

The foal weakly lifts his thin neck and barely reaches his dam's teats, and sucks hungrily. He falls back to the ground, and struggles to get up. The milk had given him just enough neroushment to rise, and he did so to nurse until full.
