Subject: A visit to a vineyard in GA---WOW

On friday night I took the kids to a vineyard near our home and asked the owner if she would be willing to show the kids how she tends her grapes.

A grandmother, who still maintains the fields even though her husband died 6 years ago agreed to show them the fields the following day. So, Tim took them yesterday while I was shooting the wedding.

Joanna and Hannah were fascinated! They learned all kinds of cool things. Like, did you know you do not grow grapes from seeds. Well, you can----but it will take a lifetime. You need a male shoot and a female shoot. Hmmmm. Interesting...

It seems her husband planted the vineyard and loved it. She loved him, and when he died, she couldn't bear to see the field go fallow. So, she has worked it ever since.

Her son is a bit of a chemist and is trying to make his own special grape for wine, too. She raises three kinds of grapes now. Muscadines, Pink Muscadines and Scuffadines.

muscadines...I think

Jed was a bit more interested in something else nearby....
praying mantis

He was so interested in fact, he neglected to see where he was stepping and stepped on a huge ant hill. One thing you have to know about Georgia is----don't mess with the ANTS. Let them be happy and you will be happy. In fact, our airport has sculpture ants crawling all over the Baggage claim like Honey I Shrunk the Kids size. 10 bites and a lot of screams later----Jed is now reminded that he is should ALWAYS be looking where he is stepping. ESPECIALLY in a vineyard.

We also learned that you have to cut back the leaves before the grapes come. You have to make a choice with grapes. Either have great and abundant grapes, or have beautiful looking grapevines, and not much grapes.

Also, it takes 3 years to receive fruit from a new vine. WOW--That means, the farmer has to love and care for that plant for three years without ever receiving any benefit from it. Tending it with the care it needs, knowing that if he does so, he will receive the fruit of his labor.

Kind of made me think of marriage and our children. We have to tend to them both for years--pouring ourselves into them in the hopes of one day receiving the fruit of our labor.

Caring for vineyards is a labor of love.

We also learned that deer are herbivors. Yeah, knew that already. BUT----if you spray your vines with egg whites mixed in water........THE DEER WILL NOT NIBBLE OR EAT THEM! They won't touch it becuase it smells like meat. HUH!

Well, they came home with loads of info to tell me and I thought I would share it with you all. At my wedding, there was a wine theme. They used corks for name card holders.
new use for corks

And empty wine bottles for vases.

My only question now is......how long did it take them to drink all of that as there was probably 30 tables and about 12 bottles per table. That is a lot of wine!

Looks like they had an awesome time! I wonder if that egg white wash works on other plants for those who have issues with deer around their homes? What a neat way for the woman to keep her husband's memory alive through the vineyard.
