Subject: A :"Winencylopedia"

I guess it's just the way I'm "geared" ...
but, I can find analogies for life in just about anything! :)

It all began when I was checking for an updated schedule of events for the Four Vines Winery ...

A link for one of their scheduled events in June led me to a "Winencylopedia"! :)
Some of you may, or may not already be aware of my interest [or, slight "obsession"] regarding definitions, and their applications ?! :)
Anyways ...
Is it just me, or can you find analogies to life in the following definitions?! :)

Complexity
Great wines have the power to leave you guessing far beyond the last drop. Inexpensive table wines are meant to be quaffable and simple, but the goal of a maker of fine wines is to create wines that have many, many layers that keep you coming back sip after sip.

Concentration
One of the best ways, however costly, to grow grapes that are packed with flavor is to limit the yield of the vine. Planting vines close together forces the vines to compete with one another. The more stressed a vine is by being so close to another, the more energy it focuses into its own production - it puts its energy into its grapes, concentrating them with flavor and intensity.

Grapes that have been nurtured, or actually stressed, in this way tend to produce wines with dense, concentrated aromas and flavors. It shows that the winemaker values quality over bulk, and also tends to fetch a higher price.

Length of Finish
In general, the longer the finish, the better the wine. Of course, if the taste that lingers on your palate is that of bananas and sauerkraut, you’ve found an exception. The best wines keep expressing themselves long after leaving the mouth.

Balance and Harmony
A wine is harmonious when its alcoholic strength, acidity, residual sugar, and tannins complement one another in such a way that no one element sticks out in the wine.

Typicity
The best wines display characteristics typical to their region of origin, grape variety, and vintage. In a word, terroir. Great wines are expressions of their soils, environments, climates, and the grapes and people that made them."

OK, so here it goes ...
BC's analogy of "life" to the creation a "fine wine"! :)

[Life's] Complexity ...
#1. - " ...the power to leave you guessing ...[with] many, many layers that keep you coming back ... ['cause I'm not sure if we will ever understand everything completely! (Well maybe at least not until eternity) ! :)

"Concentration" ...
[Many valuable lessons are learned in the midst of "stress" as we are forced to "concentrate"] ...
"One of the best ways, however costly, to grow ... is to ...limit the yield [being forced]... to compete with one another; [with the elements; or even ourselves].
The more ["stress"] ... the more energy it focuses into its own production ... [concentrating] energy ... [resulting in a "seasoning" of sorts]."

[Having] been "nurtured, or actually stressed, in this way tends to produce ..."
"concentrated aromas and flavors."
[a "sweet savour" you might say]?! :)
[leaving us with] ...
"quality over bulk."
[We are in a sense "fine-tuned" via the "difficulties" of life] ! :)

"... and also tends to fetch a higher price."
*** [this kinda caught my attention in reminding of the "virtuous woman" having her "value" being equated to that of "far above rubies"]

"Length of Finish" ...
"In general, the longer the finish, the better the [wine] ..."
[It will be worth it all to "fight a good fight" ... to "finish the course" and to "keep the faith"] ! :)

"Of course [a "positive attitude" in whatever may come our way is "half the battle" 'cause] ... if the "taste that lingers on your palate is that of bananas and sauerkraut, you’ve found an exception." ! [I definitely don't want to be remembered as someone having a "bitter spirit"] ! :)

"Balance and Harmony"
A [life that is]"harmonius" [is in] "balance" ...
[keeping everything in it's proper persepective] ...
[with] "no one element" [or, no single person taking precedence above the other] ! :)

"Typicity" ...

"Wines" [and, people] display "characteristics typical to their region of origin ... variety, and vintage ..."

"In a word, [they are] "... expressions of their soils, environments, climates, [circumstances, and reactions which help to "make" them into the people which they become]. ! :)

Just a thought!
Thanks for listening!
- BC :)

The Windy City isn't bad either, but you should really make it out to Michigan some time! We take our wine seriously here as well.

I know you had mentioned the potential for blogging about your new adventures with Four Vines, and hope that you will still consider doing so in the future.

BTW, being an anthropologist/public health researcher is also pretty cool! What other profession allows you to get funding to travel to cool places while as both a grad student and as a 'real' adult? As one of my profs recently told me, it's the opportunity to "learn and earn.". I kinda like that sentiment. In this case, my BFF and I will vacation while learning and earning in Australia. Oh and ballet classes too. My ballet teacher would kill me if I didn't keep in shape while traveling. Nutcracker season starts is September after all. Lucky to have some great studios in Sydney and Melbourne ^_^

Joanna- GO BLUE! Only 87 more days until the start of Wolverines football!
