Of the four nations in the United Kingdom, two are Kingdoms proper - Scotland and England. One is a Principality - Wales, and one is a Province - Northern Ireland. This is why the Scots were able to retain a great deal of autonomy over its own affairs. You could also mention that during the time of the British Empire Glasgow became known colloquially as the "Second City of the Empire" because of the massive industrial output. Coal from Scotland's central belt was exported the world over, ships from the Clyde shipyards could be found in every one of the world's oceans and trains from Glasgow operated in India for years. Also the indigenous language, Gaelic, is still on the go but English is by far and away the most common language in use.

All in all a very complete look over Scottish history!
