Twenty-eight oh-one.

That's the total number of casualties from the events of September 11th, 2001.

Frankly, I was shocked that that number didn't soar much higher; early estimations had the death count at around 5,000. Still, so many dead ...

I won't go into a long diatribe about what Sept. 11 means to me. I'll just remark about what I remember about that day:

I watched ESPN:SportsCenter for about an hour, from 7 to 8 EST, then turned off the TV, still wondering how the Eagles lost to the Rams in OT, 20-17, the Sunday before.

I popped in a sausage-and-cheese frozen omelette into the microwave; I started eating it, thinking about what I had to do for the day, when the phone rang.

My mom picked up the phone; the call was from my dad. He asked if we were watching the news.

We turned on the TV at around 9 AM EST; one tower of the World Trade Center was heavily damaged by a large jet that flew through it.

While we were watching, the 2nd plane struck.

I don't remember many personal details after that. I do remember that, as Philadelphia urged its employees to go home early, I had to go into the city for an evening class that was not cancelled. (7 out of 14 students, including myself, went in on that day.)

One year later, it's time to reflect.

A few other observations:

*Anyone listening to music today? Here're some recommendations: 'The Rising' by Bruce Springsteen (though 'Born in the USA' would do just fine); 'Overcome' by Live; pretty much anything by Creed (preferably stuff off of "Weathered", if you have that one ... try 'Stand Here With Me'); any anything off Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" CD

Why that last one? It was released in this country on Sept. 11, 2001.

*I don't believe Sept. 11 should become a national holiday. A day of reflection, perhaps, but not one where everything shuts down. (possible alternate solution: Sept. 11 could become such a shut-down day in NYC and Washington DC)

Finally, a thought: I believe Sept. 11 should henceforth be referred to as "Twin Towers Day". Yes, the Pentagon was attacked, but that building has now been fixed. I doubt the Twin Towers will be similarly re-erected.

I surprise myself at times; I didn't expect to type so much here.

Take care for now, and God Bless.
