"It seems a recent survey has found that more Britons can name five cast members from a soap opera called Eastenders than can name five current Cabinet members. They also found that one of Eastenders' characters called Phil Mitchell was more recognized by the test subjects than - get this - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. It's embarassing for me even to type this."

Interestingly the BBC tried to find out how genned up MP's were with the real world this evening, and showed a selection of MP's four photo's; Will Young, Ulrika Johnson, Graham Norton and someone else even I can't recall. They failed miserably.

To a certain extent it was pointed out that if MP's can't be bothered getting in touch with the people they represent, or have some awareness of popular culture, why should be expect any of the public to be interested in them? To a great extent it's the complete lack of any implied link between the public and the political process that has led to the drastic drop in voting turnouts, and apathy about the political situation.

It's not something to be proud of, but it's a mutually parasitic relationship.
