The closing ceremonies were held last night. The 2002 Winter Olympics are done. Next up, the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China (knock on wood, though I suppose it really isn't any worse of a situation than the 1936 Berlin games).

I think we Americans can be proud of the way the games went. IOC prez Jacque Rogge praised the organizing of the games "superb" and saying that they erased the bad taste the 1996 Atlanta games left, leaving it more likely that an American city might land the 2012 games (New York, Washington, Houston and San Fransisco are candidates). He also praised the American fans, who for the most part cheered for everybody and avoided the knee-jerk nationalism many feared.

Of course, not everything went well. There was the bribery scandal that brought the games to Salt Lake City in the first place. There was the judging scandal at the pairs figure skating final. There were boycott threats by Russia and South Korea for perceived bias (though neither charge has held up well). Really, only the first of those was caused by Americans, and there's soemthing to be said of overcoming past mistakes.

The Russians are still mad. Rogge is making a visit in April to try to keep them playing nice. It really would be a shame if we didn't have the Russian athletes in future games.
