Er, what happened? Here's the full text:
They are social entities - "superorganisms". They fight for power or recognition within the pecking order of nations. Right now the U.S. is the "alpha wolf", so naturally they either fight for our favor, or else they challenge for the "crown". Is it any wonder why they fight over territories? How is it any different than marking your territory with urine? The fact that these societies once contributed to civilization means that they were at or near the top at one point. There's more too it that that, and that doesn't explain everything, but its a start.
Also look at India and Pakistan now. Are they really fighting for territory (Kasmire, I think) or are they fighting for unique roles withing the pecking order. They are showing displays of power are they not (e.g. nukes)?
