Subject: Tracking Military Action in Iraq

Click here for a larger scale of this map.

Hi everyone,

I found the map above at the University of Texas Map Library, Iraq. I drew some quick arrows indicating what I "think" represents the movement of our forces to date. I could always be wrong. The purpose of this page and the graphic is to give us an idea of what is happening and provide a basis for discussion regarding the progress of the action.

It appears to me that the real action won't start until we get closer to Baghdad. The 3rd Infantry (shown in red) moved quickly to engage elements of the Al Nida Armored Division near Karbala. By moving around forces in the south, they have cut off any retreat of forces in Al Nasiriyah. Meanwhile, the marines of the Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF shown in green) ang British Forces moved on the port of Um Qasr then north to Bashra. Those areas still have pockets of resistance. But the Marines appear to now be on the move. Tony Blair reported in Parliment that they have reached Al Kut. I put that arrow in light green lines with a 'question mark' until we know more.

Richard
