Richard,

Here is algore's quote, which you highlighted: "You remember that--they actually had a proposal to increase the levels that would be permitted."
Of algore, you said: "So what we have here is a replay of the same campaigning style that got Gore in trouble in the last election. Not really a lie, but he certainly is playing very loose with the truth."

Actually what we have here is an example of a bold-faced lie by algore. Not one single person in the Bush administration has proposed increasing arsenic levels in drinking water. As others have pointed out, President Bush has only mandated that the EPA continue with the old requirements. Currently, the acceptable level is 50ppb; previously it was 50ppb....if algore (or anyone else) tells someone that going from 50ppb to 50ppb is an increase, he is a liar.

Most people know that bill clinton and algore didn't think 50ppb was too bad during the first seven years and 364 days of their terms, otherwise clinton could have issued a directive to lower it sooner.......but what most people probably don't know is that the new 10ppb rule wasn't even scheduled to go into effect until 2005! And variances were to be given to smaller water suppliers (those with ten thousand or fewer customers) for an additional two years.
The whole thing smacks of a cheap political trick....issue a directive as you're leaving office, knowing the next president will reverse it(as anyone in his right mind would)....then run around the country telling everyone how your hard work to save the children is being undone.
What's really scary is the fact that some Americans are dumb enough to fall for such nonsense. They don't know how much arsenic is dangerous, but 50ppb sure sounds worse than 10ppb.....so it must be necessary! They don't even bother to ask algore why he and his boss waited till they were packing their bags to leave Washington before issuing this order, especially if it was so important. And probably the scariest part is these people actually believe that keeping the arsenic content at the exact same level as before, is somehow increasing it!!! I'd like to have some of those dummies for tenants in my rental property...I could charge them $1000 per month, then tell them I plan to increase their rent to $1500.....but a few days later, tell them I've decided to keep it at $1000. They will be delighted to see their rent has been lowered by $500, and I can keep getting the same amount of money. They'll call all their relatives and brag about getting $500 knocked off their monthly rent, while paying the same amount. Just think, if I increase it to $10,000 and reverse the increase, they'll be saving $9000 per month.....that will give them a nice retirement nest egg.
