I'm perfectly willing to consider privatization of Social Security... I just think the devil's in the details. I want to avoid a situation where Social Security becomes just one more income flow for the rich old people whose Golden Years have already been thoroughly gilded, while the poor elders are left to live in cardboard boxes and eat cat food.

Gore was ridiculed for his "Social Security plus, not Social Security minus" slogan, but I think he was on target. I want to see a program that sets a minimum floor that the government guarantees people won't be allowed to sink beneath (without extraordinary laziness or foolishness, at least), and then everything after that can be gravy.
