My great great grandfather is Washington Mahlen Cleveland who was the son of Francis. By the info you have he must be the son of his second wife Margaret Waller since he was born in 1830.

Actually, William Henry was born in 1856, 8 years after Margaret WALLER died. The only documentation I have that shows Francis CLEVELAND was William Henry's father is a baby book written by William Henry's wife for her grandson. It shows a Martha DUNLAP as William Henry's wife. I was hoping for something to back it up.

Do you have any info on Washington Mahlen's mother? and is he the son of Francis (1796-1881) or his son Francis William (1820-abt 1852)

Oh, wait, my stupid. I mis-understood your message.
I am beginning to wonder if Francis had a bunch of illigitimate children. His first wife (Harriet STUART) is listed as living in New York with who I suspect is Francis's father when she died in 1823, and he didnt marry Margaret WALLER until 1834, and she is listed as dying in 1848.
No marriage for my Martha DUNLAP has been found, just one reference in family books even though at that point in his life he was a well known man in the community.
Washington Mahlen doesnt fit any of the naming patterns I've seen so far, but who knows. Very messy anyway!

It sure sounds messy! The info I have was told to me by my grandfather who was alive and knew Washington Mahlen, so I am fairly sure the info was accurate, in that it didn't go through generations of storytelling yet. My grandfather was pretty sharp up until he passed away just short of his 101st birthday. He lived with us and I remember him telling us about Washington Mahlen being the son of Francis and the first cousin to Grover even when I was very young (4 or 5 years old). He passed away when I was in my twenties. I am sure there was a lot of sleeping around going on back then. Heck Grover had an illegitimate child as well.
