Jeremiah was not the name of the father of Jacob Cleveland of Elbert County, Georgia. Jeremiah was the name of Jacob’s wife father. Extensive research has not revealed a Jeremiah Cleveland born or living in the Colonies any earlier than 1747. There is however a John Cleveland who is most probably the father of Jacob.

“1767 Tithables, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Taken by Captain John Ward.
John Cleveland
Thomas Hardy, Peter Lee. Negroes; Harry, Jack, Abram, Bess, Tom, Ben, Nant, Jack, Dick, Matt, Tom, John, Thomas, Nant.”

Jacob Cleveland had sons who went to Pittsylvania County, and Millie’s brothers were there Jacob also had land deals with a Thomas Hardy.

There is still a John Cleveland listed in the 1790 Pittsylvania County, Virginia census with three others in his household. This is in my opinion the same John Cleveland.

The info in the 1899 Cleveland Genealogies, where this connection is published, is incorrect and not documented.

Elaine,

I have a John Cleveland born in Habersham County, Georgia who married as his second wife Susan Forman in ca 1866. I don't have all his children. This John had a brother named Jasper, so he could have named a son named after him.

Grace, Thanks for the info. Would you happen to have John's 1st wife's name? This Susan could have been my ggrandfather's step-mother. No male was listed in the 1870 Hart Co. census except Jasper age 8 yrs. So if this John and Susan didn't marry until 1866, she couldn't have been his mother. Also Jasper had a sister (Margy) age 11yrs. in this census. Thanks

Grace: So far I have found them both to be named Jeremiah.. Millies father as well as Jacob's father. It was a very popular name in those days. It doesn't preclude Jacob's father from having the same name. Have you found anything further to prove that Jacob's father was NOT named Jeremiah? I'd be interested in knowing the source. Thanks.

Carolyn,

Where have you found them both to be named Jeremiah? I have found nothing on a Jeremiah Cleveland in that time frame. Not until 1747. I have included my reasons and references for my statements in my first post.

I'm sorry, I don't find that John and Sarah or Jasper in my records.

I have always wondered about the Jeremiah thing. I don't have any evidence that Jeremiah was the father of Jacob, so, you may be right. Now, was John Cleveland then the son of Alexander? There are so many John Clevelands this gets confusing.
Also, if anyone have any information on Jacob Cleveland
being in the Revolutionary War I would appreciate you sending it my way. I am trying to get into DAR. Or if not,
perhaps through Millie White.

Thanks

No, John, Jacob's father, wasn't the son of Alexander Cleveland (son of Roger). That John married Elizabeth Coffee/Coffey and they were the parents of Col Benjamin Cleveland of King's Mountain fame.

There has been no proof ever found that Jacob Cleveland fought in the Rev War. The old 1899 books have quoted "somebody", no name given as saying, "Jacob and four of his sons were in the War." An old unpublished 1925 manuscript by Virginia Cleveland Gant Wall also made this statement, but I believe it came from the old books, too.

If it's just getting in the DAR through Jacob, you want, you probably can. The Elbert County, Georgia SAR has accepted applications for members. Saying Jacob was a Patriot. No documentation.

Which of Jacob's children do you descend from?

Jeremiah White, father of Milley, died in 1776.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response, Grace.
Here is my (bare bones)direct line with all siblings left off. Does my info. corroborate with what you have? What would you suggest is the best approach to entering DAR? Perhaps I should apply for DAR through a maternal line. If you would like any additional information on members of this line I would be happy to share what I have. I have very little information on Wyatt Cleveland 1764-1830.

Valerie,

Roger Cleveland was the father of Alexander, Sr. Alexander's wife was named Mary unknown (there is no Mildred Presley yet found associated with this family. Who is that Jeremiah Cleveland & Sarah Mimms? There is also no Jeremiah ever been found in that time fame, as a father of Jacob. I have Ann (Nancy) Sutton as the 1st wife of Jeremiah. He married 2nd Helen Clark and 3rd Mrs. Martha Smith, according to my records. Which child do you descend from there? Or is Wyatt (brother of Jeremiah), your line? I don't have a Benjamin Andrew Cleveland, but that's not to say there wasn't one. :-) Whose son was he?

Grace
