In my research I have as yet to find in any documented records of a Mildred Presley mentioned as a wife of Alexander Cleveland. In the 1899 Cleveland Genealogies ( a good resource for Cleveland research, but there are many errors in the Southern line) there is a line that reads something like this, “Alexander’s wife was named Mary. He may have been married a second time to a Milly Presley.” This had led researchers of this Cleveland line to assume that Alexander was married twice, and had more children than the Parish records record. It is my belief that Mary had died by 1752, since Alexander signed a Deed alone.
Ref; Orange Co VA Deed Bk 1 pp 115-117
Alexander Cleveland (alone) deeds John Taylor of Culpeper Co., Nov 22, 1752 100 acres part of a patent granted to Laurence Franklyn for 400 acres and sold to Cleveland in 1738, consid. 5 shillings; cross mark to Cleveland's name to deed. Same to same Nov 23, 1752 100 acres part of patent to same party. consid. £12.108.

No wife joined in this deed. Since the transfer of realty was involved, which required a wife to waive her dower rights, we must conclude that Mary had died. It looks as if Alexander Cleveland was in bad shape financially as he was in the poor house by Nov 30, 1769 [IT:GLSG:IT]

Ref; Fredericksville Parish Vestry Book (1742-1787) Vol I, Edited & Compiled by Rosalie Edith Davis.
Nov 30, 1770 p 96 "To Edward Coffee for providing for Alexander Cleveland 1 year now to come accept his cloathing. £3.00". [Edward Coffee was his son-in- law, husband of his daughter Grace Cleveland]
Nov 30, 1772 p 104 " To Edward Coffee for old Cleveland, 3 pounds tobacco". Between Oct 25, 1773 & Feb 9 1774 p 107 "Ordered that the Church Wardens provide such things for Alexander Cleveland as they shall think necessary".
"To William Sumpter for pair of shoes to Cleveland, 5 pounds tobacco".

I have found no other entries on Alexander, so he must have died sometime shortly after February 9, 1774, at least by 1775 [IT:GLSG:IT]

Roger Cleveland was the father of three known children by two wives; John, Elizabeth & Alexander. The Mother of the first son John, is unknown at this time. Circumstantial Evidence in my records has pointed to him as the ancestor of Jacob Cleveland. The Mother of Elizabeth and Alexander was Dorcas, probably Alexander, since the Alexander family was allied with the early Clevelands.

The Abingdon Parish Register of Gloucester County, Colony of Virginia was discovered in the Virginia Archives in Richmond in 1958 by George Martin. The following births and baptisms are recorded.

Alexander Cleveland, son of Roger & Dorcas Cleveland, baptized 31 July 1687. He was born probably a month earlier.

Alexander Cleveland, Jr. son of Alexander & Mary Cleveland, baptized 25 May 1712. He married Margaret Doolittle.
John Cleveland, son of Alexander & Mary Cleveland, was born 31 July 1714, baptized 24 August 1714. He married Elizabeth Coffey. (Her name was not Martha Elizabeth. Her sister Martha Coffey married Joshua Stepp)
Grace Cleveland, son of Alexander & Mary Cleveland was born 1 September 1716, baptized 30 September 1716. She married Edward Coffey, brother of Elizabeth.
William Cleveland, son of Alexander & Mary Cleveland was born 23 February 1718, baptized 22 March 1718. He married Mary Unknown. They named a daughter Dorcas.
Benjamin Cleveland, son of Alexander & Mary Cleveland, born 21 November 1721, baptized 28 November 1721. Nothing more has been found on him and it is believed he died young.
